WEST END ROWING CLUB.
The seventh trial fours of the West End Rowing Club for the current season took place on Saturday last. There were ouly six crews eugaged, many of the members beinfr absent at football practice. Mr. G. V. fidgcumbe, of St. George's Rowing Club (in conjunction with Mr. S. E. Hughes), acted as judge, and the captain of the club again acted as starter. There was an attendance of about 100 at the beach, half of whom were ladies, and afternoon tea was dispensed to all the visitors. The order of sitting in the boats was reversed, the bow men talcing the stroke seat, and the racing genereally, and the form shown by the strokes was very commendable, and very much surprised some of the knowing ones, who freely acknowledged the excellence of the amateur oarsmen. The first race was an excellent one, the winning crew getting home half-a-length ahead. The crews were: J. Hickson (stroke), G. Mills (3), J. C. Gallaher (2), and G. R. Bannermun (I) , beating E. Armstrong (stroke), W. Court (3), f. Young (2), and J. Mackenzie (1). The second heat was contested by the following crews: J. Burke (stroke), M. Froude (3), A. Wright (2), and W. Edwards (1), against R. Levi (stroke), K. Reid (3), H. Bellhouae (2), and S. D. Hanna (1). This also proved a good event, being won by Levi's crew, they getting home three-quarters of a length in front of their opponents. The third heat proved an easy victory for M. Short (stroke), D. R. Salmon (3); F. Hake (2), and J. Darby (1), they beating EL Somerville (stroke), F. Blewden (3), P. H. Harris (21. and S. Stone (1), tho latter crew having all the worst of the drawing. In the second round Hickson's crew beat Levi's, and atter a very short spell the final between Hickson's and Short's crews came off, when Hickson's four for the third time proved viotorlous, winning the Club caps. Hickson has never rowed till this season, and though he has had some great racing this is the first trial fours he has won. His No. 2, Gallaher, who is the Deputy-Captain of the Club, has never won the final in a trial fours, though he has rowed several seasons, and this season the orew he was stroke of won every heavy maiden race at the regattas, and on these peculiar facts becoming known the Club gave both men three rousing cheers, congratulating them warmly on their victory. This will be the last fixture of the Clnb this season, though the boathouse will be open to members at any time. A smoke concert will be held on the 29th May, and the prizes to the membra (about £50 worth) will be on view in Queen-street for a week or ten days prior to the function. THE REPRESENTATIVE CREW. [by telegraph.—press association.] Wellington. Sunday. A big sea was running in the harbour yesterday, and the New Zealand representative crew were unable to do any work in their boat.. This afternoon, however, they had their second spin together, and the coach expresses himself as being more than satisfied with the effect of Daly's inclusion.
