CRICKET. THAMES V, SCRATCH TEAM.
The team of cricketers from the Thames at present on a visit to Auckland met a scratch eleven in the-Domain, yesterday, but owing to want of time, the game ended in a draw. Although the. visitors have not managed to add to their laurels this trip, they have spent a very enjoyable holiday, and will carry with them pleasant recollections .of their trip. The rain in the fore part of the day had the effect of improving the wicket considerably, but did not interfere with the play, beyond preventing an early start being made. NORTH V. SOUTH. The championship fixtures having ended in a tie between Manjawhare, Tatarariki, find Arata|-m, the match on Saturday was a combined one, in which Mangawhare and Aoroa together joined forces against Aratapu and Tatarariki, in a game which may lie well termed North v. South as far as our district is concerned. A steamer conveyed the Southerners northwards, and the band accoinpaniod them. Mangawhare and Aoroa were the first to bat, and Webster and l'urbott took up the bowling. Runs came very slowlv, anil when IS overs had been completed, Webster had secured four wickets for ten runs, and Turbott one wicket for seven runs. Webster then fell off ; his next four overs produced 12 runs and secured no wickets, and Walker took his place. Turbott continued on the spot, and got five more wickets for as many runs. Gould played a patient, steady innings for 14 runs—the only double. 'J'ho fielding was very good, anil the innings closed for a total of 47. Webster and .Smith then faced the bowling of Gould and Fitzpatrick, and Winter's wicket fell to Gould's first over. Smith fell to Fitzpatrick's sixth ball, and the South appeared to he in a bad way. But Elliott, as usual, settled down to stay, and Campbell and Corkill assisted him, so that when time was called the score stood at '27 runs for fivo wickets, Elliott 11, and Corkill 5, both not out. The former's abilities are well known, but it is not so well known that in Corkill the district has a steady and reliable young player, who gives every promise of becoming an excellent batsman. Gould's bowling was very effective, and was responsible for the dismissal, all clean bowled, of Webster for 0, Marcroft for 2, Campbell for 6, and Taylor lor 0, at a cost to himself of only seven runs for the four wickets. The following are the scores of the Northerners —C, Mansill, b Webster 3, W. Fitzpatrick, b Turbott 4. J. Elliott, b Webster 2, R. Maseficld, h Webster I), I'. Matthews, b Webster (5, C. H. TATAKAIUKI. The third round in the Junior Cup fixtures was begun on Saturday in Mr. Morgan's paddock, Aratapu, by these two clubs. Aratapu batted first and, owing chiefly to the stands made by John Brown for "20 and C. Allen for 14, managed to put up a total of 79 runs. Tatarariki were somewhat shorthanded, and when time was called had) lost three wickets for 13 runs.—[Aratapu Correspondent.] TK KOI'CKU V. ARATAPU SCHOOLS. The Kopuru and Aratapu Schools met in the same paddock, when Aratapu scored a win by 10 runs on the lirst innings (the scores being 43 and 33), but were only fiaved a defeat on the second innings by the call of rime. In Konnru's second innings, La wry and Probert, the' two first batsmen, made a good stand, and time alone prevented them from pulling off a victory— Correspondent.] PORT ALBERT V. WHARKWNK. FOOTBALL. A meeting of tho Dargaville Football Club, was held in Mr. Vail's shop, Dargaville, on Saturday evening, when Mr. C. H. Gould was voted to the chair. A delegate from the Aoroa Club was present by invitation, and the principal purpose of the meeting was to consider the advisability of amalgamating these two clubs. It will be remembered that the Aoroa Club last season played only as a
junior team, and that the Dargaville Club had only a senior fifteen. After some discussion it was decided to amalgamate the two clubs, and form one club, to be called the United Football Club, and also that the two clubs' funds now existing be amalgamated, and handed over to the new combined club. It was then decided that the first general meeting of the United Club be called for Saturday evening, April 11, inCorcoran's Hall.—[Northern Wairoa Correspondent.] _ BIRRDALE SPORTS.
