Betting: 4 to 1 against Wallace, 7 to 1 Acmena and Toreador, Bto 1 Damien. The others any price, Trentham cut out the pace immediately the tapes were released in the interests of his stable companion,''with Delaware and Wailiine following, and in this order they swept past the stand. At Oxenham's Leonidas went up to the leaders, and as the field raced along the back stretch Delaware fell away beaten. Here Wallace began to improve his position, and at the scraping sheds Gough set out in real earnest after the leaders, and with Response, who had the outside position, a sound pace was set. Entering the straight Trentham was still in command, and kept the lead to the distance, where Wallace got on terms, and immediately took command. Then Toreador, who had held a good position throughout, put in his claim, but could never reach the doughty son of Carbine, who won by a length. Trentham was a good third. Then came Response, The Trier, and Truo Blue in the order named. Time, 3in 31s. Wallace's win was a disastrous one for the bookies, and at least one member of the ring is said to have found it to his advantage to quit when Wallace's number was hoisted as the winner. _ The departed "bookie" left on the spot which knew him no more a portmanteau bearing the words, "Gone, but not forgotten."
