The Union Company's steamer Taupo, Captain Ryan, arrived from Oamaru yesterday afternoon with a cargo of general produce. Mr. E. L Coleman, the second officer, reports that the steamer left Oamaru at 7.'20 p.m. on the 16th instant, and encountered fresh north to north-west winds and heavy head sea, with tiiick weather to (Jape Palliser; thence to arrival light north to northwest winds, smooth water, and tine clear Weather. At 'JO a.m. yesterday picked up the German barque Coniinerzieurath Rodbertus and towed her into port. The Taupo leaves for Fiji this evening, Captain George Wftld, late chief officer of the Talune, taking command. Yesterday morning the Northern Company's steamer Clansman arrive:! from Mangonui, Whangaroa, and Russell with a number of passengers and a quantity of general cargo. She left for Taurauga iu the evening, and returns early to-morrow morning. The Northern Company's steamer Wellington left for Whaugarei last night. Yesterday afternoon the steamer Ngunguru left for Whangarei. The steimer Stella has gone North after a raft of logs. The schooner Awauui is loading with general cargo for the East Coast ana Gisborne, and calls in at Mercury Bay for a consignment of timber. THE MARIPOSA. The mail steamer Mariposa, Captain H. M. Hayward, arrived from Sydney last night, with a number of passengers for this i port, in addition to which there are a fair number for San Francisco. Mr. Thomas Smith, the purser, to whom we are indebted for our files and despatches, reports that the Mariposa left Sydney at 4 p.m. on Monday last, passed Cape Maria Van Diemen at 5 a.m., and Cape Brett at noon yesterday, Arriving in harbour at 8.30 p.m. Fine weather and smooth seas prevailed all the way across. _ The Mariposa resumes her voyage to Apia, Honolulu, and San Francisco it 2 p.m. to-diy. a barque in DISTRESS. Yesterday afternoon the Union Company's t. steamer Taupo towed into port the Gorman barque Commerzienrath Rodhertus, Captain ■*'j A. Knutter, in distress. The barque is
bound to Europe for orders from Haapai, Friendly Islands, with a cargo of copra. When two days out she fell in with a hurricane, during whioh she sprang a leak, and it was determined to come on to New Zealand for repairs. Particulars of the casualty appear in another part of this issue.
THE UUAPEHU. The New Zealand Shipping Company's steamer Ruapehu, from Loudon, Capetown, and Hobart, is expected to arrive at Wellington on Tuesday morning next. Tho Auckland passengers and cargo will come on by the first Union Company's steamer.
I THE RAKAIA. Yesterday the steamer Rakaia was inspected in tile Calliope Dock, by Captain Banks (the commander of the steamer) and Mr. 0. Fraser (Messrs. G. Fraser and Sons), who have undertaken the necessary repairs. The damage is confined to the forward part of the vessel, principally on the port side, several of the plates being dented. It is expected that the Rakaia will remain in dock for about a week. morrow the steamer will be open for public inspection, and the steamers of the Devonport Ferry Company will make calls during the afternoon at the Dock Wharf. A contribution box will be placed at the gangway of the Rakaia to take up a collection in aid of the Seaman's Orphanage.
