SUICIDES.
Janet Have, 64 years of age, a resident of Woodhaugh, Otago, is supposed bo have committed suicide by taking poison. Her daughter alleges that, in a quarrel with a son, deceased exclaimed, This will be tho last) of me," and drank a solution of rough on rats. The daughter administered an emetic, but the mother died next morning. At tho inquest, the jury returned a verdict that the deceased poisoned herself by taking rough on rats while temporarily insane. An old resident of Central Buller, John Carter, committed suicide at Newton, on Feb. 24, cutting his throat with a razor. The jury returned a verdict of temporary insanity.
A young man was found dead in a paddock near Masterton, shot through the head and breast, with a revolver in his hand. He was a stranger to tho district, and there was nothing to identify him except the initials "G.P."in the hat. His name was subsequently discovered to be George Peacock, of Christchurch, aged 22. On the 15th of March it was reported to Constable Russell, of the Newton police station, by telephone from Jr. Girdler, that John Jackson, a labourer, residing in Karaka-street, Newton, had attempted about one p.m. to cut his throat with a pocket-knife. Jackson died at night at the Hospital of his injuries. Ab the inquest the jury returned a verdict " That deceased had cut his throat in a fit of temporary insanity while suffering intense pain."
