FRIENDLY SOCIETIES CONFERENCE

The Auckland Friendly Societies' Conference held their annual meeting last evening in Kidd'B Commercial Hotel, Shortlandstreet. Special interest was attached to this meeting, as the new officers were elected for the coming year. They are as follow: — President, Brother A. Kidd (Druids); vice • president, Brother John McLeod (M.U. Oddfellows) ; hon. secretary, Brother H. T. Garratt (A.O. Foresters); trustees, Brothers H. J. Smith (M.U. Oddfellows), Alf. Kidd (Druids), Wm. Beehan (Hibernians), J. Strathern (Druids), and J, H. Field (Protestant Alliance). The conference has enlarged its constitution, and is now composed of three representatives from each society, instea 1 of two as formerly. After tho bußinoss was concluded the members adjourned to the dining-room, and sat down to an ample spread, given in honour of Brother H. T. Garratt.

The following toasts were given and responded to "The Queen ;" "Friendly Societies," "The Guest of the Evening, Brother H. T. Uartatt" (proposed by tho Chairman, Brother A. Kidd, in felicitous terms), " The Pant Officers of the Society," responded to by Brothers Beehan, McLeod, Webb, Clark, and Moulden, who each gave some oxcellent adviceon the Friendly Society movement, and the steps to be taken in the near future to further its best interests, particularly in New Zealand. Brother Garratt also gave some very useful information ro the superannuation qnostion, and also, the question of a dispensary. Brother Syms, M.U. Oddfellows, gave somo reminiscences re Odcuellowship 45 years npo, when ho joined tho Fountain of Friendship Lodge, which was then held in the old Mechanics' Institute (now the Kindergarten, in High-streot). The Conference is now in the sixth year of its existence, and the funds in the bank have risen from £39 12s Id in 1891 Jo £193 6s 7d at tho present date, and at the sumo timo every deserving case that has come before the Conference has been relieved, some very materially.
