THE SOUDAN CAMPAIGN.
USE OF INDIAN TROOPS SUGGESTED.
ATTITUDE OP FRANCE. Preis Association.—Electric Telegraph.— Copyright.
London, March 18, The Cairo correspondent of the Times wires that the opinion in military circles is that Indian troops would be more suitable for service in the Soudan than white troops.
Slatin Bey, who recently escaped Tom the Soudan, joins the expedition.
The members of the Triple Alliance consent to the Egyptian Reserve Fund being used for the purpose of defraying the cost of the expedition to the Soudan. London, March 19. The Times says there is reason to believe that Kassala will be evacuated to-morrow. If the report is confirmed this withdrawal will entirely alter the situation of the Italians in Africa. Such a confession of weakness must react seriously on Egypt. Both the Nile Valley and Suakim will be threatened. It is the duty of the British authorities to provide against the threatened mischief.
Paris, March 10. M. Berthelot, Minister for Foreign Affairs, has published a note calling Lord Dullorin's attention to the gravity of the results of the British military expedition up the Nile. M. Blowitz, the Times' correspondent, says the note is an imprudent one, and has weakened the action of France.
Paris, March 19. The French Government explain that the note sent to Lord Dufferin was merely intended to re-open the financial question, and they desire to maintain cordial relations with England.
M. Berthelot had an interview with Lord Dufferin of a cordial nature.
