MIDDLE DISTRICT UNIVERSITY.
A project is on foot to constitute arc endow a University College for the. middle district of New Zealand, to he situated at Wellington. It is not to he called a Wellington University College, but a Middle District University, in order that it may take in Taranaki and Hawke's Bay, with all that they may carry. There is something in this matter which should be looked after by the Auckland members. There are endowments in the Taranaki district for higher education, and one object of this "middle district" movement is to sweep them into the Wellington institution. But the Taranaki people are not quite satined about this, and a recent issue of tlif Egmont Settler contains a protest against the procedure. It says that the northern end of the middle distr is nearer Auckland than Wellington, ami that Taranaki is not willing to be robbed of its reserves for the benefit of Wellington Taranaki is, we believe, the only district included in the Act that has any reserves, and therefore the anxiety to sweep it. into Wellington. At the present time Wellington has 'lie advantage of railway communication with 'Jarainki, which Auckland In s not, but we anticipate that we shall have, within a few months, good road access to New Plymouth. But if oui members are neglectful they may tint) that the Wellington University College, or rather the Middle District University College, has captured everything in tin 1 North Island except within the provincial district of Auckland.
