The Rev. J. Bates left for Sydney yesterday by the Waihora. The Rev. F. Lai kins, of Mount Albert, returned from New Plymouth yesterday by the Gairloch, Mr. and Mrs. H. Haines were passengers to Sydney by the Waihora yesterday, en route to England. Mr, Shaw, ex-Mayor of Coolgardie, relumed from Rotorua yesterday, and leaves for Australia next week. Mr. Shaw is much improved in health. The Hons. J. Stewart, C.M.G., and Dr, Corney, Ratu Lala and Roko Tui Cakandrove, of Fiji, left for Sydney by the Waihora yesterday to visit Sir John B. Thurston. The London Morning Fosb announces the approaching marriage of Colonel H. Cautley. retired R.E., and Mrs. Edward Wingfield Humphreys (relict of the exmember forChristohurch). The Mayor of Port Chalmers (Mr. E. G. Allen), on behalf of the ex-pupils of the District High School, made a presentation the other evening to Mr. C. R. Bossence, late first-assistant master of the school, who has been appointed assistant inspector to the Ota<;o Education Board. In doing bo, he made reference to the sterling qualities of Mr. Bossence both as a teacher and as a citizen. The presentation took the form of a handeome dressing case, suitably inscribed, for Mr. Bossence, and a rery neat toilet case for Mrs. Bossence. Mr. Bossence suitably responded.
