ATHLETIC SPORTS.

CRICKET. major Elliot's scratch eleven v. the

SQUADRON ELEVEN.

This cricket match, which lias been on the tapis for several days, and has elicited a good deal of interest, took place yesterday afternoon at two o'clock, in the Domain Cricket Ground, the Municipal authorities having kindly placed a pitch at My or Elliots disposal for the game. The game was a single innings one. His Excellency the Governor, the Countess of Glasgow, Ladies Augusta, Alice, and Dorothy, and the Hon. Allan Boyle, were on the ground throughout the afternoon, the latter playintr for Auckland in Major Elliots Eleven. His Excellency Admiral Bridge, Lieut. Duff, flag lieutenant, Capts. Fisher (Orlando), Graham (Wallaroo), Meryon (Katoomba), and Browne (Ringarooma), and a number of other officers of the fleet, were also present, as well as the following members of the Government House party Mrs. Menteath, Miss Williams, Messrs. Gwynue and Guy Williams, and Lieutenant Olive Bell, of the Scots Guards also, His Worship the Mayor and Mayoress. There was a representative attendance of the general public, the ladies being in great force, the naval branch of the service being always popular with them. The Squadron Eleven, under the captaincy of Lieutenant Greatorex, were defeated by three wickets and 17 runs, the Auckland Scratch Eleven being ably skippered by Major Elliot. Considering the slender facilities the Squadron Eleven havo for practice, and the fact that in each port they face a local team without any preliminary experience of the pitch, made their srtaud a very creditable one. Tho batting of Engineer Cox aad Lieut. Greatorex verified the rumour that there were some good batsmen in the fleet, as they contributed 75 towards the total of 120 runs, by sound cricket. The former is not only a smart cricketer, but an all-round athlete, and an excellent footballer. At Wellington, where the Squadron defeated the local team, he piled up 104 in good style. The only other double figure scorers were Clerk Brown and Midshipman Hammond, with 10 each. Mr. Trapp was most prominent in the trundling department for the winning team, being responsible for six wickets, while he also contributed 61 (not out) towards the winuing score. Dr. _ Pabst follows with 22, compiled in his usual consistent style of play, while Mr. R. Blair also reached the total of 20, and Major Elliot carried his bat out for 14. Had it not been for the smart fielding of the Squadron Eleven, the scratch team would have won by a larger majority. Engineer Cox proved .as good with the leather as he had previously been with the willow, capturing no less than six wickets. , , Colonel Goring umpired for the winning team, while Chief Writer Muun (Orlando) officiated for the Squadron Eleven. The Countess of Glasgow provided abundance of refreshments, which were served in the pavilion, under the efficient supervision of attendants from Government House, One of the attractions of the day was the performance of the splendid band of the flagship (H.M.s. Orlando), under Mr. Ernest Wright, chief bandmaster, and the public were emphatic in their expressions of approval, especially as regards the selection from "lolanthe," which was admirably rendered. The following was the programme : -March. " Pestal."
