Wellington, Friday. Tup Metropolitan Permanent Building and Investment Society pays a dividend of 3 per cent, for the year.
Negotiations were completed to-day for the purchase of a site in Taranaki-streetfor the Anglican Cathedffil. The price to be paid is £7000. Mr. H. J. Williams, of Wellington, Secretary of the Licensed Victuallers' Association of New Zealand, lately compiled for the United Licensed Victuallers' Association of New South W*les an exhaustive history of the course of legislation in this colony on the licensing question from the year 1881 uuto the last session of Parliament, including also th* history of the women's suffrage movement. In recognition of his efforts the Sydney •association lias elected film a hon. life member, and forwarded a gold medal, which attaches to life membership, together with a very cordial letter of thanlfs. There are thirteen labqup organisations her? not affiliated tq the Trades find Labour Council. An attempt Is to be made to form these Into a federation, distinct from the Council.
The penalty of £100 inflicted on tho Assyrian, Michael John, for smuggling, lias been reduced to £50.
