Cardigan.—The extension of the crosscut at No. 4 level was resumed with the aid of tlw rock drill on Thursday morning last, and since then a most favourable class of country has been penetrated. A nice looking vein of quartz carrying excellent mineral was passed through this, morning. The crushing of 10 loads of quartz, broken from the reof cut in tha crosscut, some three or four weeks ago, was completed for a return of soz 15dwt retorted gold. The German Experts,—Messrs. Wichmann and Schmeisser, accompanied hy Mr, H. A. Gordon, arrived here this afternoon, from Coromandel and Tapn, and this afternoon they visited the Waiotahi, Victoria, and Queen of Beauty mines. Their visit here will be but a brief one, as they purpose paying the up-country districts a visit. Paeroa, Saturday. Silvekton.—The completion of the new plant is being pushed ahead as rapidly as the delay in the arrival of the machinery will permit, but there is hardly a probability of crushing being commenced before the end of the month, as in addition to the delay in getting the pieces of maohinery on the ground necessary to complete the plant there is still a scarcity of water, and the waberpower at present available would only drive about a third of the stampers. At tho mine everything is progressing satisfactorily and upwards of 3000 tons of ore are in readiness for crushing, so that there will be no difficulty in keeping the mill employed foil time once it starts. Favona.—This company has commenced operations under most encouraging circumstances, and if good luck at the start is conducive to a continuation of fortunate circumstances the Favona company will have a prosperous career. I mentioned a couple of weeks ago that the management intended opening out from the bottom of the shaft. This work was subsequently commenced, the drive taking a northwesterly course, and after driving between five and tan feet from the shaft a body of quart?: was intersected, which so far has been penetrated for about eight feet, with quarts still showing, so that it will be seen the lode is one of good size. The ore is of a kindly nature, and it is anticipated will assay well. However, the real value of the reef will only be ascertained when its development has been undertaken, and if it pans out as anticipated Waihi will undoubtedly hare another good bullionproducing property. Grand Junction. — Sinking operations have been resumed, the water being most successfully coped with by the new pump, which is capable of dealing with three times the quantity. The eroction of the new poppet heads is proceeding expeditiously, and they are now almost in position.

REROUTED DISCOVERY OF GOLD IN THE KING COUNTRY. Hamilton, Saturday. Two of the party who wont prospecting in the King Country lately, under a permit from the Hon. Mr. Cadman, on a block acquired by the Government, were in Hamilton to day, and report having struck a good Iwder right on the boundary of the block. They are taking 401b of the stone down to bo tested at the Thames, and are also going on to Auckland to make enquiries as to the ownership of an adjoining block into which the leader runs. Some of the stone shews good gold. HAURAKI G.M. CO. THE FEBRUARY" CRUSHING. ANOTHER GRAND RETURN. £7191 FOR FOUR WEEKS. 7oz IDWT IJgrs PER TON. At the Hauraki Gold Mining Company's mine, during the four weeks' ending Saturday last, 340 tons of ore were treated for a yield of 23980z of gold, which, calculated at the usual rate of £3 per ounce, gives a value of £7194, while the average stands at the high figure of 7oz ldwt 15grs to the ton. Last month 316 tons were treated for 20590z, valued at £6177, the average then being 6oz lOdwts 7Agrs per ton. In every sense, therefore, the latest result from the Hauraki is gratifying in the highest degree, for with 34 tons additional crushed, there has been an increase in value of £1017, and a higher average even than before attained.

WAITEKAURI G.M.CO. THE MONTH'S RETURN. llOloz FROM 135 TONS. AVERAGE £8 12s 9Jd PER TON. For the four weeks ending February 29 last 135 tons of ore were crushed and treated at the Waitekauri G.M.Co.'s mine, for a yield of llOloz bullion, worth £896 7« 4d, the average, per ton, being a little over £612s 9sd. Last month tho return was 11440z bullion, valued at £929, from 179 tons, or an average of £6 3s 9Jd per ton, so that considering the continued dry weather the result of operations, for the month just closed, cannot but be highly satisfactory. Tho returns are from the Golden Cross section of the mine, and the small ten stamper battery only. KAPAI-VERMONT. The result of the month's crushing at the Kapai-Vermont came to hand on Saturday, as follows3oß tons treated for 400oz melted gold. The previous return was 464 tons for «7oz. , GREAT MERCURY. The Great Mercury crushing for the month gives a return of 2920z gold from 480 tons. Last month 2860z 14wdt gold were obtained from 385 tons treated. TRY FLUKE. The result of the last four weeks' operations at the Try Fluke Gold Mining Company's mine was received on Saturday by Mr. H. Gilfillan, jun., as follows:—Cyanide, 119oz5dwt; battery, 116oz : t0ta1,2350z odwt melted gold. Last month the return was 187oz5dwt. BUNKER'S HILL. Mr. C. A. Stubbs, legal manager of the Bunker's Hill Gold Mining Company, states that the rumour " that rich gold nad been found in sinking winze " is entirely without foundation; BIG RIVER (REEFTON). A cable message has been received that part of the purchase money of the Big River Gold Mining Company (the sale of which was negotiated by Smellie and Co., of London and Glasgow) has been paid into the National Bank, subject to the confirmation of vendors' report. SOUTHERN STAR. On Saturday a cablegram from London was published in the Herald, stating that the Southern Star Gold Mining Company, of Hauraki, was issuing half the amount of its capital to the public. This company is stated to have been formed for the purpose of purchasing, or otherwise acquiring, mines and gold mining rights, and auriferous (and in New Zealand and elsewhere. Amongst the properties to be acquired, it is said, are an area of 15 acres, part of the old Success, at Coromandel, and other properties at Coromandet and Lower Thames. Mr. A.
