COMMERCIAL.

New Zealand Herald Office. Thursday evening. The Stock Exchange during the past week has shown rather more activity. The volume of business has not been very largo, but where there is any indication of an adequate return being obtained, investors show a disposition to purchase freely. Bank stocks are neglected, and find but few buyers. A further call upon the reserve capital of the Bank of New Zealand has been made in accordance with tho amended Banking Bill of last session. In Insurance stock, New Zealands are offering at 7'2s, South British, at 535, and Nationals at 18s Ski. Auckland Gas, old issue, sold, at £12 10s, cum div. In anticipation of a call upon the new issue the price has improved, and there are buyers at £G 4s, ex div., and no declared sellers. Sales of Gisborne Gas aro reported at 335. The mining market has been brisker, and the local brokers report a fairly large number of sales. Waihi-Silvertous have sold from 56s to 003 Od, closing with sellers at 61s 6d, and buycrsGOs. Talismanssoldat 7s 6d and la 9d. In Thames stock, there has been good business in Victorias from & 9d to 4s 8d to 3s lid. On Tuesday there was a strong demand for Cardigans, and sales were reported from Is 5d to Is lOd, closing sellers at Is Sd. New Moanataiari have also been in hotter demand, and sales were effected at 6s and 5s lOd; buyers offer os 10d, sellers demand 6s 6d. Coromandel stocks have been almost neglected. Sales in Bunker's Hill from 4s 9d to 5s 9d, closing with sellers at 6s lid, buvers at as od. There has been a steady demand for Kapai-Vermonts (Kuaotunu), and sales are reported from 78 3d to 8s to 78 9d. Try Flukes have also sold at 4s 9d. and are still wanted at that rate. For late quotations we refer our readers to the stock and share list.

The new month has opened slowly, and although during the week the coastal steamers have _ filled well with the many special productions of the province such as sugar, timber, mullet, binder twine, pumice, bricks, and the several other floods turned out from our boot and preserving factories, showing; a healthy demand, distributors outside of the industrial establishments state that onljr a perfunctory country and town demand is experienced, and that a general state of quietness prevails, The weather keeps so fine for harvest operations that the tameness of immediate business is of little moment comparatively, »3 it isevidentjthat consumption, and the use of material is steadily increasing, and that both city and province are fairly launched on the tide of prosperity. Demand is good for 48-inch corn sacks, vinegar, Cocktail salmon, lime-juice, and kerosene.

In regard to this latter the local stocks of White Rose are nearly exhausted, and the arrival of the Tillie Baker, now off the coast from New York, via Wellington, is waited for with interest. Her cargo has all been sold to arrive, and the following New York vessel brings no White Rose oil at ail. Everything points to a very firm market, as the .Standard Oil Company have raised their selling rates. There is a firmer feeling In rice. Cables from Japan report a slight advanoe, and mail advices just received state that the area limit of cultivation has been reached, while the Home consumption and export demand is increasing. To this must be added tlio extra requirement for the island of Formosa, now a part of the Japanese Empire. The | bottom level of Japan rice value appears to be touched.

Owing to the fruit preserving season there is an extra demand for crystal sugar. Outmeal is lower by 10s per ton. Several lots of limeiuice to arrive by next Island steamer have Deen placed, with Australian demand unsatisfied.

There is a considerable shortage in 48-inch cornsacks throughout the colony, and the few holders can command full prices. Calcutta rates have advanced.

There have been large arrivals and sales of fresh fruit, and the inquiry for canned and dried hus slackened off correspondingly. The phenomenal low price of monoy in Loudon is explained in a variety of reasons given in the subjoined extract from Messrs. l)e Lisaa and Son's circular of December 17, viz:—

The Bank rate has now been 2 percent, for nearly two years without a break. Gold continues flowing in with great abundance, or to put it properly it has ceased to flow ou , for the loans on enormous scales to Australia, Argentina, ltrazil, and other countries which for four or five years in the previous past were continuous, have not occurred. The immense amount of money which went to the United Slates in railways, also stayed at home, ai the swindles perpetrated In the manipulation of these railways became apparent. Also, tin millions of money which went to Australian hanks at deposits from Scotland ceased, and it was not difficult to foresee that this vast accumulation here, to say nothing of the national savings, which were estimated at £ '.00,000,003 a year, must cause a use for the money somehow. The result has been an increase in finance and trade in every direction. The Board of Trade returns, which can he gathered from other reports, have been most expansive, whilst the levenue so far as this country is concerned, Is going to leave an enormous surplus, which will put the Chancellor of the Exchequer in a very happy position.

Tho only matter for romark in the metal trade ia the burst up of the American Barbed Wire Syndicate. With the loss of the ruliug spirit who kept up the prices by personal effort and watchfulness, the syndicate fell to pieces by inability to do sufficient trade, to keep pace with the output against competitors, and the result is a fall of 10s per ton. -

Maize: Supplies short, but no change in market prices. We still quote 3s off wharf. Potatoes are worth from £3 to £3 ss, cx a ton. Cheese is coming in plentifully, and unless quality is from good to first-class there are few buyers. * Bacon and hams have advanced one halfpenny per lb, due to the strong competition among Southern curers for pigs, and the assured Sydney demand. Heavy sales have been made to Australia, and at the present rate ot orders it will be difficult to keep the trade going until the new cure. '; Grass soods: Merchants ore giving the following prices for well-harvested samples Cocksfoot, 3Jd to 3Jd; perennial ryegrass, 3s bushel. Local seeds not in favour, as mostly of one year's lay only. Italian ryegrass in reported a large crop, and is well saved j 3s

to 3s Od And 3s 9(1 bushel has been given, delivered in Auckland. Milling wheat: The whole of the wheat in this diatriot is now cut, and after it has been stacked for six or eight weeks, it will have matured and swoatiid sufficiently to be fit for milling. No miller who understands his business will attempt grinding it till it has lain in the slack for that period. Should he bo foolish enough to try it earlier, he will get innumerable ooirplaints respecting the wretched quality of his Hour. . ■ Fowl wheat: Tliore is not inuoh selling. Bran and sharps are dull of sale. Flour: Local millers are extra busy evon for the commencement of the month. In the local produce market prices hare advanced all round, and are now as follow Best dairy fresh butter, 7d; second quality, sd; and third qualify 4d lb wholesale. Eggs are now quoted as Is dozen wholesale, and Is 3d dozen rotail. KAURI GUM MARKET. • The following aro the quotations for the kauri sum market for the week ending February 5,1896 Poor ordinary, which comprises weak and rough-coated pieces, pickings, and washed nuts, £30 to £35. Ordinary, meaning hard, rough-soraped gum, varying in price according to the quantity of washed nuts, ranges from £38 to £44. Superior ordinary, meaning hard, unpickod range gum, price varying according to size, scraping, and freedom from weak pieces, from £48 and upwards. Hast Coast, £72. Supplies for fivo days in February. 48 tons. Tho supplies for January were 540 tons against 427 tons for January, 1895. Tho market is fairly active for superior and ordinary ro-soraped and East Coast. Thorn is muoh poor swamp gum coming into tho market, whioh is not in demand. Business in inferior grades is somewhat neglected. The next vessel for New York is the Tillio Baker. LONDON. Press Association.Kloctrlc Tolegrapli.-Copyrlglit. London, February 4. Tho total quantity of wheat and flour afloat for the United Kingdom is 2,503,000 quarters, and for the Continent, 515,000 quarters. The estimated American visible supply is 97,000,000 bushels. ANTWERP WOOL SALES. Press Association.-Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. London, February 5. At the Antwerp wool Bales there was a largo attendaneo and great animation in tho bidding. Prices show an advance of 10 per cont. on the October rates. AUCKLAND MINING AND STOCK ASSOCIATION.
