TOWAI BUSH FIRES.
« Ocb correspondent writes:— and the surrounding districts have got a regular Boorehiug, and, at the time of writing, the Upper Ramarama Volloy forest lands are on fire. The settlers are up night and day keeping the fires away from the houses. Several dwellings are destroyed. Amongst the greatest sufferers is Mr, C. Leslie, wlio has lately arrived from Kaiwaka. He has had a narrow escape with his life. Fortunately ho saw the danger, and had his wife and children removed before the fire reached his premises. Mr. James Brock and he remained to try to Bave the house, which was a new one (only erected last year), and they were very nearly caught in the flames. Mr, Leslie loses his house and effects. Besides all his grass, his garden and youtig orchard are destroyed ; also all his fencing, and about 30 acres of standing bush. The Marlow Post Office had a narrow escape. As the standing bush for miles is on fire, there is no knowing where the mischief will end. All the settlers are in a great state of excitement. The drought ia so great that the fire will travel over any of the paddocks. Wo are sadly in want of rain.
