FIRE IN NEWTON.
About one o'clock this morning a fire broke out in a two stall stable in West-street, Newton, belonging to and occupied by Mr. McKay. The fire was discovered by some passers-by, and an alarm was raised, th 6 horses meanwhile having been got oat in safety. The flames spread to a cottage adjoining the stable, owned by Mr. Hedley, and in the occupation of Mrs. Perkins, whose furniture was hastily taken out of the house with considerable damage from breakages. The Karangahape Fire Brigade, under Mr. Brannigan, with contingents from the Grafton and City Brigades, were quickly on the sceno, and tho fire was extinguished, though not before the whole of the stable had been demolished, and the cottage very considerably damaged. Tho stable was insured ill the North German office for £50; Mrs. Perkins' furniture, which was pretty well wrecked, was uninsured. Ib could not be ascertained whether thero was any insurance on the cottage.
