THE AUCKLAND UNIVERSITY COLLEGE COUNCIL.

A meeting of the Auckland University College Council was hold yesterday afternoon in the Registrar's oflico, Eden-street, the Most Rev. the Primate, Bishop Cowie, presiding. There were also presont: The Rev. \V. J. Williams, Messrs. J. J. Holland (Mayor), F. E. Raume, Gerald Peacocke, Jackson Palmor, Hall, Udy, and McLanrin. Donation's. — Donations of books from Messrs. Mucmillan and others were accepted with thanks. Gilliks Scholarship.A letter was read from Professor Thomas, suggesting that the tonure of the Gillies Scholarship might bo reasonably increased to three years instead of two year» as at present. It was finally decided, on Mr. Peacocke's motion, to extend the term to three years, and also to rescind the resolution passed at a former meeting, fixing it at two years. Information for the Public.—The Council agreed to reprint cortain portions of the Calendar for tho public's information, and distribute the same gratuitously. Mr. Baume was appointed to superintend the publication. Finance,—Tho Finance Committee, in accordance with a resolution of Mr. R. Udy, passed last year, presented a report- on the present condition of the Collego. For the past year the receipts were reported to have been £4706 lis, and the disbursements £4093 0s 9il. This state of affairs was brought about by exercising the strictest economy in every department, by retrenchment, and by payments made by the Taupiri Company in regard to the reserves. Tho debt of £652 9s lid had been reduced by the surplus of £613 13a 7d to £38 lGs 4d, and would have been extinguished altogether if some of the College tenants had not been in arrears with their uayments.
