ATHLETIC SPORTS.

CRICKET. The Selection Committee of the Auckland Cricket Association have chosen tho following 17 players to go into practico in view of the interprovincial contest between Auckland and Wellington, to take place at Auckland on February 22nd and 24th :-J. Arneil, T. D. Ball. D. Clayton, E. J. Cotterill, H. Gould, D. Hay, W. Hawkins, F. V. Kelly, H. W. Lawson, I. Mills, G. Mills, R. Neill, F. J. Ohlson, Dr. Pabst, W. Stemson, E. Wright, W. T. Wynyard. Practices will be held every Tuesday and Thursday, commencing this afternoon. The list mentioned is subject to alteration before the final selection. ARATAPU V. TATARIKI. The Aratapu and Tatariki Clubs met on Saturday afternoon on tho former's ground, and an interesting match was begun. Batsmen seemed quite unable to stand against the bowliug of Webster, Turbott, and Miller, and Aratapu in two innings only put up 50 runs, whilst Tatariki'a first innings only produced 18, and in their second innings two wickets are down for nil. The game is thus far, judging by Saturday's play, in favour of Aratapu, but for all that it is quite possible that Tatariki may score a win, as they liavo only 33 to make to secure it, and circumstances may be entirely changed next week. Given below are the scores, the bowling analysis does not include tho two wickets fallen in Tatariki's second innings :- Aratapu C. C.-First and second innings: Webster, st Elliott, b Turbott 1, c and b Legge 3; French, b Miller 1, b Turbott 0; Maicroft, run out 12, c Elliott, b Miller 3; T. This match looks a certainty for Tatarariki, who, in their two innings, put together 111 runs, whilst Aratapu, playing two men short, scored only 33 runs in their first, and thus have tomake79runa to win. ThisO.Paton, who bowled very successfully in the first innings, will scarcely consent to give them. Tho score-book record of this match is not very clear, so simply give the total of runs made by each batsman. Tatararaki ll.—First innings: Minchin, 0 ; Healey, 15 ; A. Johnston, 8 ; Heywood, 9; Chambers, 19; Warmington, 1; A. Paton, 2; S. Stuart, 0; A. Armiger, 3 ; H. Probert, 1; VViddup, 0; extras, 5: total, 63. Aratapu ll.— First innings: C. Allen, 0; Brown, 6; J. Day, 1; C. Nield, 2; S. Edmunds, 1; Christiansen, 5; H. Kinghau, 0: Gibbins, 10; G. Soott,2; extras, 6: total, 33. manoakaramba v. MANOAWHARE. A team of cricketers from tho Mangakaramea district arrived in Dargaville on Saturday morning to try conclusions with the Mangawhare Club. They came down from Tangiteroria in the s.s, Ethel, and were given a cordial welcome by local players. The visiting team, as a whole, was scarcely up to local club form, but their bowling was fairly good right through, and their fielding excellent. There were no catches dropped, but several were well taken, and the picking up was very clean. In this department the visitors were ahead of the local team. There was no big scoring on either side. A. E. Harding with 12 runs was the highest scorer in the first innings for Mangawhare, and the total only reached 40. Mauugakaramea replied with 21, their display of batting being weak. Mr. O'Carroll, who captained the visitors, batted well, and playing a good forward game, held his wicket well, but tho rest of the team were weak in handling the bat. In their second innings, Mangawhare scored GO, aud Maungakaramea 34, so that the visitors were defeated by 45 runs. W. Fitzpatrick secured fivo wickets for 13 runs iu the first innings, and C. McDonald four wickets tor 9 runs in the second. The wicket was very bumpy, in spite of the attention paid it, tho dry weather had evidently marred the beauty of it, The visitors returned home on Sunday morning. The full scores have not bean supplied mo.—[Northern Wairoa Correspondent.] TE ARAI V. WAIPU. A cricket match was played at Mangawai between teams from To Arai and Waipu. Mr. J. Sarah kindly granted the use of his paddock for the occasion. The Waipu eleven were all disposed of for 1G runs in their first innings, bub Te Arai only succeeded in passing this total by three runs. In their second innings Waipu put together 123. Towards this total J. P. McKay contributed 23. Norman McLeod was not out with 22, while J. McLean was run out after reaching tho half century. Te Arai wanting 120 to tie, pub up 75, Waipu thus winning by 45 runs. Tho highest scorers for Te Arai wore, in the first innings, A. Dale 11, and in tho second innings R. Gordon 27. The return match was played ou the same ground on the 25th January. This time the tables were turned, To Arai winning by 7 wickets. The rf scores were :— Waipu, 36 and 27; To Aral, 49 and 18 for 3 wickets. For Te Arai W. T. Sarah made 24 aud S. Sarah 12, not out. In the second innings of Waipu W. T. Sarah performed the hat trick, the la3t four wickets failing to add anything to tho score.—[A Correspondent,] : THAMES MATCHES. On Saturday afternoon the cricket matches in connection with the Thames Cricket Association were resumed. The weather was fine, though very hot, and the attendance was fair. United I. met _ and defeated Rover 1., a result that was quite unexpected, United going in first scored 47, of which Firth, a new arrival from the South, made 16 by good cricket. Tayloi also batted well for 14. Rover 1. followed, but had only made 31 when their last wicket fell, Ross and A. Billing contributing nine each by careful play. United thus won by 16 runs. HIGH SCHOOL V. TARARU 11. In tho junior match there was another surprise. High School going iu first scored 21, nearly half (10) being byes. Baker 3 (not out) and Gillies (3) were the chief contributors. It was thought Tararu would have easily beaten this total, but when their last wicket fell they had only made 20, of which Darrow made 9 and Ryan 4. Tho High School in their second innings did better and at the call of time were all out for 34 (Hammond 7, Hall 0, Donovan 5), thus winning on the first innings by one run. As Rovers 11. were unable to place a team on the field United 11. claim a win by default. LAWN TENNIS. At a meeting of the Match Committee of the Lawn Tennis Association held yesterday afternoon, the ties for the Championship Singles were drawn as follows:— Ladies: Misses Patterson (D.) and i. Those not having byes in tho first round have to play off by Saturday, the 15th instoat. It will be seen from the above drawings that there will bo some very good contests in the first round, and the result of the match i between Mis 3 Jolly and Miss A. Nicholson will be looked forward to with interest by all tennis players. We are glad to notice two entries by Dovonport ladies this season. In the gentlemen's matches Mr. Paterson has to play a member of his own club (Mr. Brabant), this being the only match in the first round in which members of the same meet. The other matches Bhouldbeall pretty even. Mr. Goldie has a strong antagonist iu the present champion, and Mr. Stevens has tho same with the ex-champion of the colony. ______
