DEATH OF A MAORI CHIEF AT OROMAHOE, BAY OF ISLANDS.

Hira Pod, chief of the Ngatirabiri hapu of the Ngapulri tribe, died at Oromahoe on January 20. For many months he has been very ill, suffering from consumption, and yet at times ho would brighten up and give his friends hope of recovery at the last. His death wos somewhat judden. Archdeacon Samuel Williams conducted divine service in the native church at Oromahoe on January 19, and no one expected that death was so near them. In the old war times in the Bay, 50 years ago, Hori Pou, father of Hira Pou, was with the missionaries at Paihia. He was always a friend of the British. Hira Pou was a welleducated man. In his youth his kianga had a good school. Now, although there is a fine lot of youngsters growing up, there is no ichool, much to the disgrace of all concerned. Deceased was held in high respect by his European .neighbours as well as by the natives. A large number attended at the tangi and at his funeral, which took place on January 24.-[Own Correspondent.]
