Wellington, Saturday., Mrs. Udy, who arrived in the colony in 1840, has died near Cartorton.
Peart, of Fitzgerald's Circus, dived off the maintop gallant yardarra of the ship Nelson into the harbour this afternoon— a vertical distance of over 100 feet. The feat was witnessed by between 3000 and 4000 people. A collection was taken up for the Benevolent Institution and Home for the Aged and Needy, which will benefit to the extent of some £25.
Gerard Boedinghauß, licensee of the Island Bay Hotel, died rather suddenly this morning from the bursting of a bloodvessel.
The Rev. Otto Fitzgerald, youngest son of the Controller-General, curate of St. Mark's, Wellington, is about to leave for England, to assume a similar position in Staffordshire for two years. Sunday. The Acclimatisation Socioty intend to introduce tho Elliott pheasants, natives of Ning Fo, China. Experiments have been made by the Acclimatisation Society in crossing fontinalis with brown trout, and also rainbow with brown trout, in each case with great success. The latter cross is now to naturalists.
The Minister of Lands left for Dunedin by the Corinna this morning. Palmerston North, Sunday. Ab an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the destruction by fire of the Longburn Hotel, in which Michael Powor was burnt to death, the jury returned a vordict that there was no evidence to show how the fire originated. They added a rider to the effect that every hotelkeeper should provido a ladder to reach the window.
The annual competition of the polo clubs in the colony takes place here on March 28 th. It is expected that nearly 20 teams, with 150 ponies, will be present. Gisborne, Saturday. The heab to-day is intense, the thermometer registered 134 in the sun, and 90 in the shade at midday, There has been no rain except a few drops for weeks, and people throughout the district are crying out for wator.
DoNEDiNi Saturday. The weather was unduly hob this morning, giving place to light rain this afternoon.
