WELLINGTON ANNIVERSARY.

[by tkleoraph.—press association,] Wellington, Wednesday, A I'CtfUG holiday is being observed here today, on the occasion of the sGtb anniversary of the Wellington province. The weather is fine overhead, bat a strong northerly wind is making things disagreeable. In town the chief attraction, in addition to races at Hutt, is the Port Nicholson Yacht Club's Annual Regatta, but this fixture is not causing so much interest as usual, owing to the absence of outside entries. There was a large oxodus to the country by tho morning trains. A heavy sea in the harbour interfered considerably with tho success of the regatta, several smaller craft being unable to luce the elements. In the first-class yaoht race the Waitangi has a good lead, and will probably win, with the Maritana second. The Ngaire, lately of Auckland, was five minutes late in starting. The Isca has a commanding lead in the second-class event. The Atalanta, lato of Napier, did not ttart. The Jennie Reid, built by Mr. R. Reid, of Auckland, won the third-class yacht race.
