~,,';; CRICKET. • WIIANANAKI V. OIOHGA. Oft December 28, a cricket match between Whananaki and the Otonga dub was played in Mr. Johnson's paddock, which wore quite a pay appearance. The newly • formed local club, however, has not yet got into form, and play resulted in an easy victory for Otonga.— Correspondent. MANUKAU ASSOCIATION V. TABABU 0.0. A match between the above was played at Bombay, in Mr. Proude'a paddook, on the 31st December, and resulted in a win for the Association team by 21 runs on the first innings, time not permitting the match to be played out. For the visitors, W. Cartor was the chief scorer, he playing a splendid inninggsof 27 not out, going in first and carrying out his bat. For the home team, R. Lyons 23, F. H. Brown 20, W. G. POM ALBHRT V. TE ARAL A match was played at Port Albert on tho 21st December, between the Port Albert and Arai teams, resulting in a victory, for the visitors by 17 runs. Arai lost the toss, and went first to the wickets, and when 60 runs had been put up with the loss of six wickets, bid fair to make a long scoro, but the last four wickets only put on two ruus. Port Albert were a few runs ahead in the first innings, but in the second innings they failed to pull off the match, although Louis Armitago and R. Hunt acquitted themselves very creditably. The following matches were played on the Eden and Epsom Lawn ou Saturday afternoon :— Combined Handicap Doubles : — Miss Spiers and Mr. A. Peel (owes 15 and twoquarters) beat Miss McMaster and Mr. H. Gentles (receives j-15), 9-4- Miss Spiers and Mr. A. Peel have now to play Miss Bull and Mr. Woman in the final. Men's Handicap Singles :— F. J. Dargavillo (receives j-15) beat P. Dawson (receives two-quartors-15). O. Solierff (receives two-quarters-15) beat J. P. Dargaville (receives i-15), 4-6, 6-2, C-3. J. Peacock (receives 15) beat G. H. Baker (receives 15i), 6—3, 6—2. J. Peacock (receives 15) beat A. T. Harrison (owes two-quartors-15), 6—4, 6-4. The final between 0. Scherff and J, Peacock will be played on Wednesday at half-past four, and the committee will bo glad to see friouds of the players on tho lawn. The Progressive Tennis went off very satisfactorily. Miss Nicholson winning the ladies prize with 8 points out of 9, and Mr. Androws the men's, with tho same number of points. Miss Hardie and Miss Nicholson tied for last place, us also did Messrs. Harvey, Rice, and G. H. Baker. Some of the games were very Interesting and close. The best of three games was played, and the No. 5 court was called the King court. The first players finished rang tho bell. Tho progressive tennis having proved such a success the club will probably have some more games during tho season. Already various inquiries havo been made whether the Eden and Enjoin v/ill have another tournament at Easter, hut that will depend on the members of the club and whether the other oiubs will support the movement. If it is decided to hold another tournament sets will bo done away with, and the committee will try and arrangeso as not to keop players (especially the .ladies) waiting longer than can bo helped. Miss Nicholson was playing on the lawn on Saturday, having returned from Wellington. Miss Lean, oi Christchurch, is also up. Mr. J. R. Hooper returned by the Takapuna on Saturday. The Eden and Epsom Club members and their friends presented Mr. Hooper with five guineas as a Christmas present in consideration of what he has done for tenuis in Auckland, and to show the good feeling which exists between him and the club. PAPAKURA VALLEY V. NYAIROA, This match was played at Clevcdon on December 23,. and resulted in favour of Wairoa by live games to three, Miss A. Sutherland and Miss Stephens (W.) beat! Misses Grata (P.V.), 6-1,6-3: Miss Bull and Miss Middleton (P.V.) beat Miss Sutherland and Miss Stephens (W.), 6-5, 6—4; Mr. C. Atchison and Mr. A. B. Barter (W.) beat Miss King and Miss Grattau (P.V.), 1-6, 6-2, 6-4: Mr. L. Wallis and Mr. R. J. Atchison (W.) beat Miss Bull and Miss Whits (P.V.), 6-1, 6—4; Miss Grattau and Mr. King (P.V.) beat Miss A. Sutherland and Mr. C. Refreshments were provided by the lady members of the Wairoa Clubin their usual liberal manner, which left nothing to be desired, The contosts were very closo, and the day was all that could be desired for tennis. tug-of-wan This was a ooutesk between two teams of nine each, selected on the field, by A. Stewart on one side, and Peru on the other. Two pulls out of three were won by the team selected by A. Stewart. This completed the programme, when a few wrestling bouts by anyone wound up a very enjoyable day's sport. A word of praise is due to the committee for the munner in which the day's proceedings were conducted. Good feeling prevailed throughout the day, and all seemed satisfied. There was a dance in the hall in the evening, at which about 50 persons were present. The dance broke up at about 2 a.m.—[Own Correspondent.]
