CORRESPONDENCE.
AGRICULTURAL STATISTICS.
Sir,—Concerning the accuracy and value of the above, when taken in the loose manner I pointed out in my former letter, I have merely to remark, in reply to the Enumerator, that the law defines a course to bo adopted to ensure an approach to accuracy, and renders the proprietor liable to a heavy penalty for giving false returns, and it should not be within the province or the enumerator to set the law at defiance to save himself the trouble of a second visit to gather the form which should have been left. In the instance I quoted I was ignorant ot the return actually collected by him, but presumed there could possibly be only slight error. However, from the acreage and number of stock given by him in his letter in this morning's Herald, I may say that there is a discrepancy between that and the true amount ot over. 100 per cent, in one case, and 30 per cent, in the other. I will not indulge in slang as the enumerator does, but trust the same percentages of error are not found in the returns of other enumerators ; otherwise it renders the wholo thin? a farce.—l am, etc., Remuera.
