[BY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION.] j '••"' Lvttewon, Thursday, The Lfttelton regatta proved a great success, and m capacity of the Railway Department was taxed to the utmost, between 17,000 and 18,000 neoplo being conveyed through the tunnel. The sailing races were favoured with/a nice fresh north-east breeze, and a fleetfof four competed for the liberal prize of £10? offered by the Regatta Committee. The Wfitangi of Wellington was amongst the contestants, but she was defeated on rating allowance by the Zephyr, which boat had 12m. ]a. to spare. R.Gilchrist, of Wellington, won til! Grand Handicap with 15 points, oeinn first twice, and second once out of four distances Th» second-class race was won by the Kaiori, with tho Oname second; and the raco tor boits not exceeding one rating was declared off, and will be re-sailed, owing to an accident \to one of the contestants. The rowing races sere highly successful, and produced some Wllent racing. Canterbury won the Senior Mrs, with Wairewa second. Lyttolton won t> Senior Sculls, with Wairewa second, Wrewa won both the maiden events ; also nnior Pairs and the Senior Single Sculls; wife Lyttelton won the Youths' Double Sen*, and Wairewa the Youths' Pairs. Ak»pa secured the Junior Single Sculls. TheiHon. R. J. Seddon arrivod during the '■ afternon, and was present for the remainder of thlday, and the Hon. W. P. Reeves was also i Went. A splendid submarine ex--1 plosioKvas got off under the supervision ol Falconer, and the blow up was without a ebbs one of the most interesting items of the jay's sport.
