INTERCOLONIAL CRICKET.
NEW SOUTH WALES V. WELLINGTON.
[BY TELKORAPII.—I'RI«S ASSOCIATION.]
Wellington', Saturday. An Ms tho cricketers wore favoured with finn weather, but the sun was very warm. About 2000 were present, though tho attendance would have increased towards the aftoruoon had the local men not collapsed as they did. leaving the visitors winners by 225 runs. The wicket played fairly well in the morning, and the visitors knocked up close on a century in an hi i- and a half, when, at half-past twelve, the last man was dismissed with the total at 'J'W. Wellington requiring 2GO to win beian the second innings just prior to the luncheon adjournment, which took place after a couple of singles bad been scored. On resuming, the team thoroughly collapsed 011 a wicket which, crumbling badly, suited Callawav anil Hume to aT. While some of the Welshmen expressed the conviction that the local men were not worth a century on such a wicket, others went so far as to say half that, number would be nearer the mark ; and so the result proved. Callaway and Hume were simply unplayable, tho ball cutting about most erratically, and had one or two smart chances in the slips been accepted it is probable that the whole team would have been o"t for somewhere about .'SO.
At 11. the Welshmen tesnnied their innings, and as the score was rising by leaps and bounds the full strength of the bowling was tried, though it was not until '20 had been added that Upham got a good length ball past Ridge. Shea had a merry and lively innings, hitting all the bowlern here, there, and everywhere, but one of Beuhow's glancing off the shoulder of the bat, Warren in the slips had no difficulty in bringing about a separation, which had the appearance of bring extremely dangerous, lie had scored 2"i. including four fours—9 for 2*2. Hume joined Cobcroft, who bad gone in lirst, and was playing with evident determination to see tin' innings through without losing bis wicker. Newcomer was beginninz to hit freely, when, in attempting to send Avhbolt to leg, the hill skied and (ell into Niven's hand at the wicket. Cobnft carried out his hat for 8"i, the result of a brilliant disp'ay of patient cricket. His score included six 4's and four 3's. The visiting captain, who has not had the best of luck in the other matches in the colony, was warmly congratulated by the inemb»ra of tile team. With only a few minutes to lunch, R. Blacklock and Ashbolt faced the bowling of Callaway and Hume; and with a single for each hatsman an adjournment was taken. Then rot set in, and when seven wickets wero down the score stood at the miserable total of 15. linrton and C. Gore played with greater confidence, and added I t to the total, when tho former succumbed to a trimmer from H'tine. The rest of the. innings needs little description, except, that.
