(fROM OOtt OWN correspondents.] Nkwstkad, Friday. ' The annual picnic in connection with the breaking up of the Marsh Meadows School was held in one of Capatin Runciman s paddocks; and, as the weather was beautifully fine, was a great success. Over £6 had been collected for prizes, and this sum judiciously laid out by the ladies, provided a prize for every child attending the school. The usual games and races were indulged in during the day, and the refreshments provided by tho ladies wore much appreciated by all. A social was held in the schoolroom in tho evening, when songs and recitations were given, and a dance Wound up a most pleasant day a amusement. Hamilton, Friday. The cricket match between the Taroru (Thames) and a combined team from the Hamilton, Tnupiri, and Tuhikaramea clubs was played on Sydney Square to-day, and resulted in a win for the Waikato team by six wickets. The visitors scored 43 and 62 in their first and Second innings respectively, the chief contributors being K. Macgregor 13 and 14, uud Clark with 20 not out to his credit. The Waikuto scored 78 in their first innings and 28 for the loss of tour wickets in their second, the chief scores being .S. Keid 20, Browning 18, and Field not out with 9 and 17. Mr. Silvest-re Davis had .a narrow escape from drowning yesterday morning _ in the Hamilton Baths, He is unable to swim, and having got out of his depth was in serious difficulties when ho was pluckily rescued by Master Charles Hume, wiio jumped in haltdressed to his assistance, and succeeded in bringing Davis back to laud. A man named Cowan, gardener tit the Rukuhia Station, met with a serious accident when returning from the Alexandra races, last night. Cowan's horse fell, seriously injuring his rider about the face and lower part of the body. Dr. Brewis was sent for, and after having done all ho could for the sufferer, ordered his removal to the Waikuto Hospital, where ho was taken this morning. It is reported that au operation will bo necessary. I'aeroa. Friday. The weather during the last day or two has been very oppressive, the heat to-day being most intense. The horses arc consequently suffering a good dual, and quite a number of deaths among them have occurred lately, To-day the mail coach from the Thames did not arrive until about two o'clock, the delay being occasioned hv the fact that two of,tlio horses got completely exhausted during the journey, one at Puririand one at Hikutaia. The coach was crowded with passengers. A proposal emanating at Auckland is now on foot to form a Gokitields Club, and a good deal of support has been promised inOhinemuri by those who have, often to frequent Auckland on goldfields matters. brume, Friday. Dr. Waddington is at present in the Hospital at Hamilton, suffering from an attack of congestion of the lungs. He is reported to be mucn better to-day.
