COUNTRY NEWS.

MANGAW'AI. The Christmas holidays have commenced, and numbers of men arc on the move for a little rest and recreation. The coal measures we have often heard si much of might bo opened now, if they really are in existence. The Rev. E. H. Wyatt preached t-> * good congregation on Sunday last. I lie travelling is much better now. The road* are quite hard, and the ground is cracking from the heat. Apples and fruit generally promise an average crop, some trees are lieavil,- laden, while otherswith as fair a show of bloom have none. Applications, in the shape of printed circulars, on behalf of the Sclwyu Memorial Window, nt Selwyn College Chipel, Cambridge, England, have been received. The contributions arc likely to be pretty general from those who knew the good Bishop in the early times. Hay making is now in full swing, and ii promises to be one of the best seasons foi

many years. Early potatoes arc being taken up, and maize sown for late green stuff. There arc rumours of land near here being surveyed and cut up iu small sections for sale.

I understand that the examinations ai Tara School wero eminently successful, ill passed, and at the Beach School ouly a few missed. This must be most satisfactory to both parents and teachers. ■ Property in the district is constantly changing hands. L'he picnic of last Tuesday was for the schools, females and children free. The s.s. Kawau took a good number, aud many boats wore employed. About two hundred attended. There were sports of various kin Is, and prizes given. It was most satisfactory. Mr. Brook and Mr. Webb were most indefatigable, and the whole affair passed on well.

The Christmas number of the Accklasp Weekly News is much liked. It is the best of its kind, and should sell largely. It would be a great convenience if letters from Kawakaw&and Hakaruwere forwarded by every steamship.-- Correspondent.
