The New York World states that several English bishops havo cabled messages of peace. Pulpit utterances in many American churches condemned the extension of the Monroe doctrine. At numerous public meetings resolutions were passed urging that the Venezuelan dispute be referred to arbitration. Lo.vdox, December 23. Canada lias asked for 20,000 magazine rifles. The Times points out that the difficulty with America emphasises the need for a fast Atlantic line to Canada, Venezuela is blustering on the strength of President Cleveland's message. London, December 23. The feeling in England is calm iu response to the calmer atmosphere in the United States. The congregation in Plymouth Church cheered the sentiments from the pulpit in favour of the maintenance of peace, Lord Rosebery declares that an out' break of war between two mighty nations over the Venezuelan dispute would be the greatest crime recorded in the history of the world.
