DISTRIBUTION OF SCHOOL PRIZES.

ST. FRANCIS DE SALES CONVENT SCHOOLS. Prior to breaking up of the St. Francis do Sales Convent Schools, Wyndham Street, for tho holidays, tho annual gathering for tho distribution of prizes, took place on Friday, and thoro was a very large gathering of parents and friends of tho pupils to examine their work, and mark tho progress which they had made in the various departments of their tuition. As usual there was an excellent coucort and eiitertaiuinent provided by the pupils. There were four pianos, on which duets and trios were played with great .skill and taste, and the vocal waltz,' Littlo Gipsies," played in character, and in which the cachuca dance was produced successfully, fairly took tho enthusiasm of tho audience. Recitations were also given, and Mary Cooper, Flossie Quinu, Macgie Grace, and Evelyn Macdonnell particularly distinguished themselves. An interesting charade followed, and was a great success, Miss Howden, Miss Quint), and Miss Lily Ryan distinguishing themselves iu the leading characteis. At the closo of the concert, as well as beforo it, the spectators had an opportunity of examining the work of the pupils—fancy work, cushions, drapes, painting, drawing, mapping, lacework, and a large number of specimens of Mountmellick embroidery. The paintings wero greatly admired, particularly the flowered table-tops and the beautiful mirror paintings of water scenery, the chief characteristics ot which were flamingoes, ibises, and water lilies, otc. The effect of the double representation on tho mirror surface was very pretty indeed. _ Trior to the distribution of prizes the Rev. Father Madden, who, in tho absence through illness of His Lordship Bishop Luck, attended to deliver tho prizes, gave a brief address. lie said that an examination of tho works of art on exhibition, i.nd tho musical talout shown by tlio pupils showed conclusively that the education received in this school could not be surpassed, and it was a sliamo for Catholic people not to support such schools and timid shoulder to shoulder with their priests in the cause of Catholic education. He concluded by highly complimenting the sisters on their untiring ami tenacious patieuco as teachers, and on tho excellence of tho results as shown that day. FR17.8 list.
