INTERCOLONIAL CRICKET.

»- NEW SOUTH WALKS V. OTAGO. [by teleubapii,—press association] Du.s'kdix, Friday. The cricket match, New South Wales v. Otago, was commenced to-day on the Carisbrook Ground, which was in fine order, dry and fast. The weather was all that could be desired, save that a northeaster occasionally troubled the bowlers. The attendance was never more than 1000. The Hon. J. U. Ward was present at lunch, and proposed success to cricket in Mew Zealand. A batting display was not expected from the local team, who have beon usually unfortunate in the long spell of bad weather which put practice out of the question, but it lacked that vigour usually characteristic of Otago. the first hour's play having produced only '2B runs, while three wickets had fallen. Downs infused some life into batting while he was at the wicket, but beyond thisanda careful innings by Johnstone, there is not much to chronicle beyond the fine fielding and good bowling of tiie visitors. The record of how the wickets fell shows how little the visitors could do with the bowlers—l for 1.2 for 10, .5 for 10, 4 for 17, 8 for 23, 6 for 2.1, 7 for 25, S for 27. Then Noonan, the left-hander came in. Changing the style of bawling for him appeared to demoralise both bonders, at any rate with the assistance ot Burton the rout was checked, and the score rose to 92 before another wicket fell. With four moro added the innings closed, Burton carrying his bat out for an invaluablc'ij, while Noonan'i total, even more serviceable, was 118. Otaoo.—First Innings. A. Clarke, b Noonan 2 J.
