RAILWAY ARBITRATION CASE.
[it TKUQBAPH.— ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, Wednesday. At tho Arbitration Court, this morning, Mr. Ronayne was pross-oxamined at length a3 to the probable traffic and cost of the maintenance of the line. He considered that if the Company charged 25 per cent, over the Government rates, as suggested, it would add to the annual receipts about £16,690, but If extreme rates were charged traffic would be lost, and go chiefly by sea. He estimated the passenger traffic at double the present coach traffic, and reckoned £150 per mile as a fair rate of maintenance on the East and West Coast lino, and £140 on the Nelson section. Mr. Lowe, Resident Engineer of New Zealand Railways, and Mr. Hudson, Assistant-General Manager, gave similar evidence, As to traffic and maintenance, Mr. Rotherara, Loco. Superintendent, estimated the cost of running per train mile at Is 4d. Furbhor papers woro handed in, bringing the total number of exhibits to 183.
