The following appeared in the London Morning Post of October 5 — A Renter's despatch from Capetown states that the New Zealand mail steamer Rimut&ka, which arrived at Capetown on the 14th of September from England, has had an eventful voyage. The captain states that on the 6th ultimo afire was reported, and it was found that the charcoal used for the refrigerating chambers had caught alight. The flames were extinguished, hut during the night the fire broke out afresh, and it was evidently more serious. The passengers on deck, and for a time considerable anxiety prevailed. The officers and men, however, with the aid of some passengers, made gallant efforts to subdue the outbreak, and succeeded in doing so in a very short time. No material damage was done.

THE LEADING WIND CASE.

We understand that the Supreme Court of the United States lias recently made a decision which virtually amounts to a con* demnation of all the proceedings that were taken about three vaars ago in this port against Captain Hinckley, of the ship Leading Wind. The decision arose over a British ship called the J. W. Parker, which caught fire in Calcutta loaded with jute for New York. The law of America is thus brought into conformity with English practice prior to the innovations made in IS7G by the late Chief Justice Cockburn. Mr. Connolly, the American Consul at this port, who has a full report of the Parker case, has written to Mr. Thomas H. Mabin congratulating him on the triumph of his views.
