The mail steamer from the Islands brings news that) the Roman Catholic mission station atTapitonea, in tho Gilborb Group, together with a lot of valuable property, was set on lire by natives, and completely destroyed. Mr. Swayne, the British Commissioner, hog successfully initiated a new form of government) in the Ellico and Gilbert groups. Each group will now be entiroly governed by a native chief, assisted by a magistrate, and tho Rosident Commissioner having final jurisdiction. These Islands are flourishing uudor the protectorate established three years ago.
