WASHED OVERBOARD.
Ddwug the voyage of the barque Kathleen Hilda, which arrived from Newcastle yesterday moraine, the seoond mate, Ellis Thomas Tree, was washed overboard and drowned. Captain M. MoKenzie, the master of the vessel, states thab on the night of the 3rd instant, Tree was standing on the rail, inside the rigging, attending to the mainsail; when'a heavy sea broke on board, carrying him overboard. A lifebuoy was thrown over, and the ship pub up into the wind ab once, bub there was too high a sea running to lower a boat. Tacked ship, and sailed backwards and forwards over the spot where Tree was washed overboard, far two hours, bub nothing was seen of the unfortunate man. The nighb was very dark, and it was raining very heavily ab the time rof the occurrence, the ship travelling at the rate of about 6£ knots. Two other men. were dose .to Tree ab the time the sea broke on board, one of whom was knocked down and washed aboub the deck, bub escaped with a few bruises. Tree was a native of Adelaide, and was aboub 43 years of age.
