[BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Thames, Thursday. j At a meeting of the Thames School Committes' Conference, last evening, it was unanimously resolved, "That a local gentleman be selected by the Conference to contesb the next vacancy on the Board of Education," and subsequently a further resolution was passed, to the effect that Mr. M. Whitehead be requested to stand. [ay TULKORAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] New Plymouth, Thursday. ■ A Bmarb and rather prolonged shock of earthquake was felt at a quarter to one this morning. There have been also several slight tremours of the earth since lasb night. Another sharp shock of earthquake was felt at 9.40 to-night. Dunedin, Thursday. The Board of Governors of the High School have unanimously decided to appoint a lady principal to the Girls' High School. The Mayor unsuccessfully endeavoured to fix the salary at the same amount as the present rector received. It was objected that the finances of the Board would nob allow this, and it was decided to offer £400 with free board and residance.
