SOLAR ECLIPSE.
On the morning of Thursday next, September 19, a partial eclipse of the sun will be ▼isible in this colony. The following particulars have been computed for Thames and will be sufficiently approximate for Auckland:—At 6h. 46m. the first contact will take place at an angle of 39deg. from the sun's vertex towards the left. Ab 7h. 38m. the greatest eclipse will occur, when •486 of the sun's diameter will be obscured. At Bh. 35m. the eclipse will end. At the times civon the moon's position angles will be 270deg., 215 leg. and 157deg. respectively. The planet Venus, which has for some time past been visible as an evening star, will also be passing the sun about Bdeg. south. With a suitable telescopeit should appear as a beautiful threadlike crescent, and if atmospheric conditions are very favourable, pos»ibly its whole disc may be faintly discernible. At the time of mid-eclipse it will be above the sun, bearing about 30deg. towards the right, and at a distance of 16 times the apparent diameter of the sun.— Gtiifio, Thames Observatory.
