/Staff-engineer W. C. Fincham, has been appointed to B.M.S. Orlando. Mr. Rawson, S.M. at Invercargill, is transferred to the Dunstan district, Mr. Nugent Wood, S.M. and Warden, retiring. Sir George Uibbs' injured ankle, it is reported, causes him great annoyance. One of his faithful followers, Mr. F. Wright, is also crippled. Captain Broan, Government Entomologist, has been visiting the orchards in the neighbourhood of Auckland, and leaves today for Monganui and the Northern settlements. Chief Justice Way, of South Australia, who is a Bible Christian, of which religion his father was a minister, will nob attend a racecourse, even in his official capacity as Acting-Governor. i Miss Emilia Soldene, the opera bouffe actress, who for somo years past has been engaged as musical and dramatic critic of the Sydney Evening News, is going to London to publish a novel dealing with the new woman. The Hon. A. M. T. Duncan, M.L.C., of Fiji, arrived from Suva by the Fiona on Saturday. The hon. gentleman is visiting the colony to recruit his health, and after a short stay proceeds to Melbourne and Sydney. Mr. H. C. Jones has been selected as the second nominee of the Boilermakers'Society to tbe Board of Conciliation. The Wellington district branch of the Australasian Institute of Marino Engineers has decided to nominate Mr. D. P. Fisher. Last night a handsome tea service was presented by the members of St. Benedict's choir to one of their number, Mr. E. Gatland, on the occasion of his marriage with Miss M. Heath. The presentation was made by the Rev. Father Gregory.
Dr. Frank Cole Madden, who for the last twelve months has hold the position of Senior Resident Medical Officer of the Melbourne Hospital, has left for London for the purpose of entering one of the large London hospitals to gain extended experience in his profession. Yesterday morning ab High Mass and again ab vespers Miss Smith, organist at St. Benedicts Roman Catholic Church, impressively played the "Dead March" from Saul in memory of the late Father Downey. Many of the congregation were affected to tears.
Mr. Gerhard G. Mueller (eldest son of the Commissioner for Crown Lands, Auckland), third engineer of the s.s. Rotokino, who has been studying ab the Trinity House Navigation and Steam Schools, Wellington, on Tuesday last passed his examination tor a Certificate of Competency as second-class engineer in the mercantile marine. The examination was conducted by Mr. Mowatb, the Principal Examiner of Engineers for the colony.
Mr. D'Arcy Dawes, son of Sir Edwin Dawes (chairman of the New Zealand Shipping Company), was a passenger from London by the Rimutaka." Mr. Dawes, who is on a tour round the world, is accompanied by Mr. Sandeman, nephew of Mr. Sandeman (Governor of tbe Bank of England). Mr. H. De V. Gilbert, of the Union Steamship Company's local staff, who has been on a holiday visit to Australia, joined the Rimutaka at Hobart.
The Sydney Morning Herald of the 18fch insb, says :-" We understand that a meeting of the medical profession was held yesterday for the purpose of considering the case of Naval Surgeon Lea, who was recently dismissed from his position on H.M.S. Ringarooma. It was decided that steps ehould be taken with a view to placing before the Naval authorities in England the medical aspect of the circumstances that led to Surgeon Lea being arraigned before the Court Martial."
