THE CLIMATE AND, DISEASE.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—l saw in yesterday's Herald that a "New Chum" asked you the cause of so many deaths from heart disease. The sama question was asked the editor of the Lancet more than 30 years since. Ha said he could not; tell the cause of heart disease, but it was nob known in England till after the introduction of tea. " JN'ew Chum" asks ii the climate is the cause. I will refer him to what Dr. Newman, of Wellington, says on the climate from a medical point of view, there is little to interest too physician who studies his fellow colonists ; with the rare exception of a person bitten ,by the kabipo, who, as a rule, does not die though he suffers a good deal, and the occasional illness and still rarer death of soma child, from eating poisonous berries, there is not one single disease which colonists acquire from the .■! Maoris, not one single disease arising l from change in the soil or climate, or diet, or anything whatever in the environment. Any emigrant from the mother country '\ on landing here is absolutely free from danger of incurring any disease from which at home' he would be exempt. In every other quarter of the globe ; our roving ellow-countrymen are liable to some new and special disease. Here the colonists suffer from no one single disease which - they have . nob' themselves imported. ' They have given many to the natives, bub taken nob one in return.—l am, etc., Celt. Cambridge, May 23, 1895. .
