AUCKLAND CITY COUNCIL.
An ordinary meeting of the City Council was held yesterday evening, when there were present:—The Mayor (Mr. J. J. Holland), Messrs. Warren, Trenwith, Farrell, Julian, Grey, Baume, Cairns, Hesketh, Dignan, Thome, Stichbury, Courtney, Paterson, Hewson, White, and Glover.
Correspondence.— application for reduction of ground rent, made by J. Ehrman, was referred to the Finance Committee. A letter was received asking for a remission of rates on the mission hall of the Sailors' Home. A motion thab the communication be sent to the Finance Committee was negatived, and the letter was simply "received." An application from J. B. Bell for a permit to erect a signboard was referred to the Streets Committee. The Technical Schools Association asked for free water for their buildings for the first two terms. Declined. The Town Clerk reported that the Colonial Secretary had forwarded £66 17s 2d, being half the difference in the cost of licensing elections of 1891 and 1894; the Government had also paid £42 14s 6d, the balance of rent due for the Punakitere endowment. An application from Mr. John Mowbray for a permit to repair buildings ab the corner of Hobson-streeb and Pitt-street, was referred to the Streets Committee, to visit and report. Messrs. W. and G. Winstone asked for a crossing over the footpath leading into a lane off Newton Road (formerly Fairburn's property). The engineer reported that according to the building regulations owners and occupiers of lands or buildings had to make and maintain crossings for horses and vehicles. It was decided to send a reply in accordance with the engineers' report. Messrs. Keals and Son, architects, submitted plans of a duplicate of Mennie and Dey's shed for storage purposes in Mills lane. The engineer reported that a brick wall should replace one of corrugated iron. Referred'to the Streets Committee. The Mayor mentioned that the contract in this case was let, and to send the plans to the committee would delay the spending of a lot of money. ' Several members condemned the letting of the contract on the assumption that the plans would be passed. The matter was referred to the Streets Committee. Several applications were received for the appointment of ranger of the Waitakerei reserves, and referred to the Legal Committee; and an application for a reduction of rent from J. W. Dickens was sent to the Finance Committee.
Petitions.—Mr. Baume presented a petition from residents of Lower Queen-street, asking for the erection of a public convenience in that district. Mr. Glover presented a petition from 85 residents and ratepayers of Wellington, Hepburn, and Napier-streets, in reference to the formation of a covered drain, in continuation of the one running down Wellington-street. Both were referred to the Streets Committee.
Water Supply.The Mayor, Messrs. Kidd, Julian, Thorne, White, Warren, and Dignan were appointed a committee to consider and report on the matter of water supply, and that the engineer's reports and Mr. Kidd's motion were referred to the same committee. A letter from the Mount Eden Road Board asking for renewal of the arrangement for water supply was referred to this committee.
