THE STRANDING OF THE DEVON PORT. The following account of the stranding of the barque Devonporfc at Circular Head, has been received from Captain Greenwood :— " The Devonport made her first appearance at the port of Stanley on Easter Monday. Owing to the easterly swell the vessel remained at anchor until the following Wednesday, and did not berth at the new pier until the dusk of evening. On the morning of the 18th the work of loading was commenced, but the luckless barque had to give place to the steamer Pukaki on tho night of the same date, and brought up to her anchorage in the bay with the wind south-west, and no reason to anticipate danger. However, toward the early morning of Friday, the 19th, the wind suddenly veered to the east, and gradually freshened to a strong breeze. At 9 a.m. the Devonport parted her chains, and after an ineffectual effort to get up sail, drifted on the spit in close proximity to the side of the old wharf. As the tide was ebbing the vessel had to remain in this exposed position for some hours, during which she rolled heavily. With the returning tide the wind moderated, and after hours of hard work the vessel was worked to leeward of the wharf, where she listed heavily to starboard and remained immoveable. On Saturday morning the vessel was found to be making water beyond the control of the pumps, and every effort to lighten the ship was made by discharging cargo. Purnpinsr and discharging were continued, and the vessel was eventually got on an even keel. At the time of writing her quarter was exposed, should the wind again back to the eastward. Until the vessel is placed on the hard the damage cannot be estimated, but several butts are started, and probably the sternpost has suffered injury." Since the above was written the barque lias been abandoned to the underwriters, and is to be sold. — i
