Try Fluke's (Kuaotunu) have sold from Is 9d to 2s, and 'there are sellers at 2s. Kapai-Vermonts have sold at 2s sd, sellers 2s 6d. There is nothing fresh about the general state of business. It continues satisfactory as a rule. Demand keeps up, but the sanguine anticipations of a big development are a little early. It takes time to seethe trade effect of the mining revival, and the work of English capitalists on the Thames peninsula. The proof of auriferous wealth ib so pronounced that nobody doubts that we are on the eve of an era of prosperity, but while all this is very satisfactory, the weekly alterations in commercial phases are unimportant.

Although there is so far no bank alteration in rate of exchange on London, it is generally thought that the flotation of the million and a-half loan, as well as the stream of English money for investment in mining and otherwise, must bring about a re-adjustment of the exchange rates. The market report is unaltered. Colman'B starch continues a difficult if not impossible line to get hold of. Candles are in strong request, especially the imported brands. Quicksilver is wanted. There is an increasing inquiry for explosives, duo to the greater prosecution of mining work. Usher's special reserve whisky is scarce. In liqueurs Benedictine is taking a front rank in the market call. We clip from the Melbourne Australasian Review of 29th April the report re kerosene, whichconfirms our references for weeks past: —" Che market for kerosene has taken successive leaps, until its present price is such that a month ago it would have been thought impossible. A combination or ring has been formed between the American and Russian controllers of the trade, the result of which hos been that the price has been raised until the laid down cost in Melbourne at present rate would equal ll£d per gallon. For immediate business the quotation is from to Is, but no considerable parcels are quitted at anything less than Is. The Auckland market is as a rule the lowest-prices market in the colonies, simply because of its control of kauri gum, which means that for the New York trade kerosene is exchanged for gum, and it suits the American operators to provide tonnage from Auckland by loading oil as the chief cargo, and save exchange. During the week kerosene has been keenly sought after, with, however, the little rebellious nature to subscribe to the inevitPtble."

The American advices about turpentine reI The American advices about turpentine report a heavy rise in price. The cable advice that the butter stocks of colonial are practically cleared, shows a surprising absorption. Within a very short time the markets were in a state of glut. Perhaps this is really the best news of the week, but a recovery in price is doubtful, seeing the very large quantities afloat. In the grain division, maize has been the scarce line. We quote the market value at from 2s to 2s Id, for lots off wharf, with difficulty in filling buyers' requirements, even at a spring in the price. The Southern demand for this cereal keeps good. Oats are in sympathy with a greater firmness reported from the South, though it is impossible to make any figure alteration, but buyers cannot get their own road, like a week or two ago. Potatoes are very plentiful, with a small reduction in ex store price. Milling wheat; Considerable arrivals at Auckland mills ex (_)hau and Tarawera. Great excitement immediately followed the publication of the Government complete agricultural statistics for New Zealand, disclosing that there was a tremendous falling off this season in thequantity of wheat harvested, and that there was barely sufficient for our own requirements. The price rose at once, and for the first time for over three years the price of flour also went up ten shillings per ton. Fowl wheat is a penny per bushel dearer. Bran is scarce, although 5s per ton higher. Sharps are in good demand. Flour Heavy sales and deliveries. The price has advanced 10s per ton. In the local produce market the prices remain as follow: Best dairy fresh butter is Bd, second quality 6d, and third quality 5d per pound wholesale. Eggs arc Is fid per dozen wholesale, and Is 9d per dozen retail. KAURI GUM MARKET. The following are the quotations for the kauri gum market for the past week Poor Ordinary, which comprises weak and rough-coated pieces, pickings, washed nuts, and poor darks, £28 to £34. Ordinary, meaning hard rough - scraped gum, varying in price according to the quantity of washed nuts, ranges from £35 to £40. Superior ordinary, meaning hard, unpicked range gum, price varying according to size, scraping, and freedom from weak pieces, from £45 and upwards. East Coast, £68 (nominal). The market is weaker, especially for poor ordinary and ordinary, also for dark gum. East Coast is without demand just at the moment, and price must be considered nominal, as no one seems prepared to sell for less. COLONIAL SCRIP. Press Association.—Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. London, May 8. Queensland and New Zealand scrip is quoted at per cent, premium, and West Australian at 4J. LONDON. Press Association.—Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. London, ay 8. The total quantity of wheat and flour afloat for the United Kingdom is 3,640,000 quarters, and for the _ Continent 1,490,000 quarters. The American visible wheat supply is estimated at 76,300,000 bushels. The wheat market is weaker, and prices have declined 3d to 6d. Silver, 2s GJd. WOOL. Press Association.—Klectric Telegraph.— London, May 8. At the woo! sales yesterday German and American representatives were operating largely in good combings. Later. At the wool sales a good selection was offered. Prices are very firm, and continental buyers are making heavy purchases. AUCKLAND STOCK AND MINING ASSOCIATION.
