LAND AND INCOME TAX.
[BY telegraph.— PßESS ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, Tuesday. In response to inquiries at tho Land and Income Tax Department, as to sending in returns before or after re-valuations made in cases where objections had been lodged, the Department state that the time will be extended. A large number of owners have already been informed that there is no necessity for awaiting replies to objections before making the return. Reports from assessors are coming in and answers going out as fast as possible, bub the Department think that in their own interests landholders should return their own estimated value whatever may be the result of the objections. More objections have to be dealt with than was anticipated, and the assessors have a difficult task to correctly gauge land values just now. Thousands of returns are coming in daily.
[by telegraph.—own correspondent.] The papers upon which taxpayers'returns have to be made are different from former years. In regard to business income, the form is more inquisitorial than heretofore, lb is stated in the country papers that accountants will have to be employed in many cases to make up the return. Already there is great discontent expressed with the inquisitorial demands. Those who complain of Government official intrusion will have ample opportunity to judge what ib is like. There is strong protest againsb this form in various parts of the country.
