THE DIALECT OF THE FACE.

To every sincere and thoughtful studenb of physiognomy, the human face is practically an open book in which he is easily able to read, by its fixed and native peculiarities, or it« ever-varying expressions, the mind and character of its possessor. For the iaatruotion of thoso who may bo interested in this important science, it is the purpose of the writer of this article to briefly rehearse some of the moro salient signs of the face which are, to the physiognomist, unerring indications of character. The eye is a very expressive organ. Take first its form. Large eyes in a small face usually indicate a spiteful, vindictive nature. Fulness below the eyes is an invariable token of the gift, of ready fluent speech. Oblique eyes generally go with untruthfulness and want of principle. Eyes that aro always half-closed indicate innate shrewdness and oftentimes insincerity. Slow-moving eyes are generally tokens of forethought and business ability; their owners are generally economical, but not to the point of avarice. Eyes that rovoal the whole of the pupil are salient signs of a fickle, impulsive temperament, with indecision of character. When the eyebrows are regularly arched and dark and heavy, it i» an indication of sound judgment. Eyeit which show a circle of pure white round the pupil belong to persons of sterling character and blameless life. Next take the colour ot the eye. Black sparkling eyes are generally united witli good taste, refinement, and penetration. Large clear, blue eyes indicate activity and versatility of mind. Dull, blue oyes, especially when they are small and retreat far back baneath the brows, are signs of a frigid, solf-containod, suspicious nature. Small black eyes, beneath heavy brows, are usually associated with a deductive mind and shrewdness. Grey eyes betoken a prudent and reserved person. Full, clear blue eyes generally accompany a bright, vivacious, ardent temporament. Brawn eyes are an invariable index to an amiable, lovable disposition. Black eyes are ill every sense the heritage of the rash and impetuous folk. Tins nose, also, is not without its significant signs. A pointed nose is generally the property of a person who interests himself unduly in other folk's business. Marrow, thin nostrils imply small lung power and low vitality. Nostrils that are wide and full indicate healthy lungs and natural rigour. When wrinkles are seen constantly on the side of tho nasal organ it« owner is of an avaricious and grasping nature. A nose whose point turns skyward if often a sign of a tyrannical and coercive disposition. Large noses are invariably associated with great capacity, but, whether for weal or woe, is dacided by certain other salient points. The forehead of a person is likewise very suggestive of character. A long forehead indicates intelligence; a short forehead, activity. A conspicuous forehead invariably shows great penetrative and executive ability. "Fulness of the temples is very noticeable in persons of marked mathematical ability. A prominence just over the eyebrows is a sure sign of individuality. An irregular, corrugated forehead shows that its owner is a person of an original and investigating mind. Foreheads wrinkled in the upper part, while the lower half is smooth, show dulness and stupidity. A projection in the top of the forehead with a cavity beneath indicates weakness of intellect. Long foreheads, with tight, smooth skin, belong to frigid, selfish people. The forehead of an intelligent and deliberate person has regular wrinkles, parallel with the eyebrows, A high, perpendicular forehead is a tture sign of an unsympathetic parson. A man of marked ability may be recognised by one deep, perpendicular wrinklo on the forehead, with one or two parallel lines on either side. Persons whose temples are fuller above the oyes than below are generally possessed of musical ability. Hoavy, dark, overhauging eyebrows, with a prominent lower forehead, indicate deductive judgment to a high degree. A retreating ; chin implies indecision of character. When the uppor lip constantly projects its possessor's besotting sin is arrogance. When the lower lip acts in this way it is a sign of malice and greed. Lips tightly closed belong to secretive persons. A good chin, viewed in profile, shows a marked depression above it and beneath the lower lip, and an equally noticeable fulness below. Black hair is always associated with robust organisation. Red hair is invariably connected with an ardent and loyal disposition. Yellow hair belongs to the fragile and delicate. The upper part of the countenance is the mirror of mental power, the lower portion indicates action. A perfectly formed face should be divided into three equal parts : from the roots of the hair to the root of the nose, thenco to the tip, and from the tip of the nose to the tip 01 the chin.
