OUR FIRE BRIGADES.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —What do the Government contribute to the cost of the fire brigade, that they expect the fire brigade should neglect) the business they were appointed for, to attend to risks on wood buildings outside the city for a Government who refuse to give any grant in aid ? Why are wood buildings erected for Lunatic Asylums, when there is,' and must be always tin element of dangetf among the insane and those of weak intel< lects? Your correspondent "J.B.'' finds, fault (so easy and pleasing a duty) with the fire brigade of our city. Why does he not doso< with the Government and the insurance companies, who do not aid the funds of the fire brigade, but leave it to a comparatively poor municipality to bear the cost and burden? 1 The comparison of Auckland and London is certainly most amusing. "J. 8." should 1 volunteer his services. No doubt then all would *go _ swimmingly. It happens that' "J. 8." slightly exaggerates our" population (kindly meant no doubt). The city, which supports the brigade, has a population of 35,000, not 50,000. —I am, etc., Practical
