Sir,—l see by this day's Herald that the Mayor of Gisborne has done a wise act, by proclaiming Thursday a public holiday, thereby allowing tradespeople to keep theii shops open on Saturday. Canuot you, Sir, prevail_ on our councillors to carry a similar resolution here, requesting the Mayor ol Auckland to declare Wednesday, so that struggling shopkeepers may have a chance to keep their hands and pay their way in bad times like the present, when we have so many unemployed about our streets.
