THE SHOPS ACT.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—l see by this day's Herald that the Mayor of Gisborne has done a wise act, by proclaiming Thursday a public holiday, thereby allowing tradespeople to keep theii shops open on Saturday. Canuot you, Sir, prevail_ on our councillors to carry a similar resolution here, requesting the Mayor ol Auckland to declare Wednesday, so that struggling shopkeepers may have a chance to keep their hands and pay their way in bad times like the present, when we have so many unemployed about our streets. If, Sir, you succeed in accomplishing this, you will confer a great favour on shopkeepers and assistants generally.— am, etc., J. H. Hannan, Victoria-street,
