THE YACHT RACE AT WELLINGTON.

AN UNSATISFACTORY COMPETITION, [Br TELEGRAPH. PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, Sunday. Great interest was taken in the sealed yacht race yesterday, owing to the fact that the competitors included the Waitangi (from Auckland), Mascotte, and Pastime (from Lvtteltou), and all the principal local yachts. The course was once round the champion course of Tuesday, about 16 miles. A heavy northerly breeze was blowing at the start, but moderated as the day wore on. Waitangi (scratch) soon took the lead, and maintained it to the finish. The race was robbed of a good deal of interest owing to one of the Mascotte's crew (N. Haydon) falling overboard, and she lost so much time in attempting to rescue him that she lost any chance of winning, and gave up. She had a handicap of six minutes from Waitangi, and when the accident occurred was several hundred yards behind her. The Pastime, which was overhauling the Mascotte, stopped to assist Haydon, otherwise she would have won the first prize on her time allowance of 15 minutes. As it was, she takes third prize, being less than one second behind Waitargi. The first prize was won by Isca (17 minutes), who finished 15 minutes behind Waitangi. If the Lvttelton boats can remain, the race will be re-sailed next Saturday. Judge Oliver, of Sydney, was umpire. Haydon was rescued by the yacht club's steamer in an exhausted condition.
