THE CRISIS IN FRANCE.
RESIGNATION OF THE PRESIDENT. : • Press Association.—Electric Telegraph.— Paeis, January 15. The President lias accepted the Premier's resignation. M. Bourgeois is likely to succeed M. Dupuy as Premier. / Later. M. Casimlr-Perier, the President, has resigned. Paris, January 16. M. Casiimr-Perier'e resignation as President came unexpectedly, and created great political perplexity and dismay. The attempt of the Chamber of Deputies to override the judicial decisions of the Council of State regarding the railway companies, indicated an intention to assume the powers of a convention, which the President refused to countenance..
The English press is inclined to regard the resignation as precipitated, and indicating a lack of moral courage. M. Caaitnir-Perier's message to the Chamber or Deputies declares that he regards the vote of the Chamber as a secondary incident, but says a struggle has begun against the Parliamentary regime and the public liberties, and he had hoped the President would have been exempted from the attacks or defended. He begs of the Cabinet to provisionally withdraw their resignations and the request has been granted. MM. Dupuy "and Challemel-Lacour repeatedly, though without success, appealed to the President to reconsider his decision, and even went as far as to ask his mother to intervene.
It is believed that the retiring President will be re-elected by a large majority. MM. Brisson, President of the Chamber, and Ohallemel - Lacour's names are mentioned as possible candidates for the office.
