WOOD PAVING FOR HOME MARKETS.
Amongst the orders given oub by the Government for timber, suitable for woodpaving, for trial shipment to the old country, an order for 100,000 feet was placed with Auckland timber merchants. Half of this quantity has now been prepared by the Kauri Timber Company who will commence to load to-day in the s.s. Mamari. The timber has been most carefully prepared under the personal supervision of Mr. Broad, general manager, and Mr. F. White, mill manager. Every plank has had individual inspection and where the slightest defect or blemish has been discovered that plank has been rejected. Every piece of timber is of so accurate a dimension that a gauge can be passed over any or all of them, the sizes being as true to gauge as though they had been _ planed. With such care it is scarcely possible that any complaint can be made in regard to inequalities. As to the durability of the timber Mr. . White yesterday afternoon sawed through a block that had been in one of the busiest parts of the city for 12 years, and the timber was found to be as sound as on the day on which it was first pat down.
