A correspondent to the South Australian Advertiser vouches for the accuracy of the following story :—On Sunday morning Mr. J. H. Murdock, of Brentwood, discovered what appeared to be a wriggling mass of reptiles, and as two tails could be seen, bat no head, he was inclined to the opinion that he had discovered some new species of reptile which might prove exceedingly formidable. Curiosity, however, led to a closer examination, which disclosed the fact that a large brown snake between sft and 6ft in length was in the act of swallowing a sturdy deaf adder, some 6in of which was already lost to view. A vigorous attack was made on the snake, which struggled violently, but could not be induced to eject his half-swallowed Sunday dinner. The adder, though still alive, could not extricate itself from its unfortunate position. At Blenheim, during the recent flood, the driver of a cab drew up opposite the house of his passenger, but the wheels of the vehicle sank into the water-table. The horse started to swim and the cab to float, bub the driver at once jumped on to the horse's back, undid the harness, and swam down the street, leaving the cab standing there. What became of the passenger the report does not say.
