HOBSON RACING CLUB.

The New Year's Day -..races' at Te "Kbporu have evidently caught on, and the Hobson Racine Club may well congratulate themselves on the great success that attended their last meeting. - The weather was hot, and dry enough to please any caterer of drinks, and tor those who attended for pleasure there were plenty of trees to shelter under, whilst to those who attended on racing business the weather was immaterial, for good fields, straight running and close struggles, with big dividends on the machine, occupied their attention pretty fully. The grandstand was packed, and the club will"have to consider the advisability of enlarging it for future meetings. The course was in fine order, the starting very satisfactory, and every racer went straight for the money, and was only beaten when unable to do better. Mr. Langford was starter, and Mr. J. Lindlay the judge. Mr. Seymour, the secretary, carried everything through in fine order, and was well supported by the stewards and other officers. The handicappers, too. must not be overlooked, for the close running in several of the events showed that their work was cleverly done. The following are the events and results :— Handicap Hurdle Race of Haovs, second bone to receive Ssovs. Two miles.—Mr. Sarah's Oscar, list 41b. 1; Mr. Ngakuru's Ben, list, 2; Mr. Irwin's Rabelais, list 21b, 3. These were the only starters. Rabelais and Ben started off together leaving Oscar to follow, but at the third hurdle Rabelais ran off the course, and in the last round Ben's jockey broke his stirrip, and the jump threw him on to the horse's seek and caused him to drop his whip. For some time Ben appeared in the distance to be without a rider, and Oscar overhauled and passed him. Stanaway, who was riding Ben, recovered himself and put the horse to it again, but having no whip was at a disadvantage. Amid great excitement Ben (rained slowly on Oscar, but was unable to catch the judge first. There were 66 tickets on the machine, 20 on the winner, dividend £1 9s.

Maiden Plate of iteovs, second borse to receive lsov. from stake. One mile and a-quarter.—Mr. Tomlinson's Dolph had a walk over for this race none of the other entries facing the starter. This was a splendid raci, and was not won till the finish. Dolph and Forest Queen also started. Dolph and Review led for a considerable distance, and then Transit showed to the front and there was a bij? race between her, Review, Pakeha, and Dolph. Transit dropped out, and seemed to be done, out netting her second wind came up again with a tremendous rush, and secured next place to Pakeha, Review and Dolph being close up, so that there was very little between first and fourth. 155 on the machine, 96 on the winner, dividend lis. Daphne, Lochiel, Zulu and Rebel also ran. Temptation took the lead at the start and was never caught 77 on the machine, 2 on the winner, dividend, £17 10s. A protest was entered against Temptation that he was identical with Mystery entered for the Maiden Plate, and not eligible as a hack, but the protest was dismissed. Flyixg Stakes of 12sovs; second horse to receive Ssovs from stake. Three-quarters of a mile.—Mr. Jo wilt's >ulkv, Sst 31b, 1; Mr. Ngakura's Pakeha, 9st, 2; Mr. Sarah's Transit, 9st 21b. 3.
