DEATH OF PROFESSOR SEELEY.

London, January 14. The death is announced of Professor J, R. Seeley, M.A., in his 61sfc year.

6 Professor J. R. Seeley, M.A., was born in London, in 1834, being a son of Mr. Seeley, a publisher, of Fleet-street. He wa educated at the City of London School, and Christ's College, Cambridge. He took his degree, and was also Senior Chancellor's Medallist, He subsequently became the principal Classical assistant at his old school. In 1863 he was appointed Professor of Latin in University College, London, and • six years later he became Professor of Modern Hisbory ab Cambridge. His best known literary works are "Ecce Homo ; A survey of the life and work of Jesus Christ (a book which created great excitement at bhe time, and called forth numerous replies), "Natural Religion," and "The Expansion of England," besides a number of classical and historical works. He was also from time to time a contributor to several of the groat English reviews. Professor Seeley, especially during recent years, took a very deep interest in bhe British Colonies, and only a few months ago was one of the moving spirits in the formation of a society having for its object the strengthening of the cords that bind together the various parts of the British Empire.
